K.J.’s best friend, his father Nicholas Reider, died when K.J. was only seven years old. K.J. captures the moments he cherished with his dad and hopes that other children will treasure them too.
There are number of books about death for kids, but only a few by children authors, written when the sting of death is still fresh. When a parent dies, children experience grief because of death in their own unique way. K.J. allows his grief, and in the end his hope, to flow through his pencil as he jots down his special memories.

As the illustrator of this book, I admit to having a bit of a biased opinion, so I will only comment on the text. I took on this project because it really touched my heart. It is obvious that the story was written by a child, and while it's not the most eloquent book you'll ever read, it has what many stories lack, sincerity. It's straight from the honest and pure heart of a child who simply misses his dad and finds comfort in Jesus. Two days after I received the first printed copies, my own father passed away from cancer. Although I'm an adult with over 20 more years of time with my father than K.J. had with his, I'm finding it just as difficult to face life without my dad. No matter how much time we get with the people we love, long or short, we'll always miss them when they leave this world. As I write this, I am trying to follow K.J.'s example, as he urges those with a grieving heart to trust in God, and to remember the good times with those who've passed on. Even as adults we are to come to Jesus like the little children do, telling him our troubles, and trusting him to heal our hearts. So, while this story was especially written for children who've lost a parent, I think there's a lot of wisdom adults can glean from it too. I could also imagine it would be a good choice for parents to use in teaching their children about death from a Christian perspective.Product details

I am a counseling intern and sometimes reading a book about loss can be easier than just straight-forward bringing it up. I liked that it is written by a child for children, which makes the words and meanings easy for kids to relate to. Creating a project of the child's own loss story, after seeing how another child told his story, can be a huge help and give the child a voice in an out-of-their-control situation. The prayer was very touching. I intern at a Christian school and gave a client the option to read the prayer together or skip it and she wanted us to pray together. It was an added bonus that I work in Wisconsin and the family members are Packer's fans! This also helps the kids in my area connect to the book.
My husband passed away and I began searching for helpful books for our children. This is a topic that's hard to have, and it's wonderful to have books written like these to help with the conversation. We're a family of faith and it was even harder trying to find Christian faith-based books!!!! For parents looking for other resources to help their grieving child(ren), I found another great one that my kids love and read often when they're thinking about their dad called - CAMERON'S DREAM. Both are great reads!! I've since started recommending them to families BEFORE they're impacted by the pain of loss. I think it better equips children for something they'll most likely have to deal with at some point in their lives.

Did not like this book because it did not have paragraphs and it is not purposed intertan or inform that's why I don't love this book...
Just as described but note that there is religion discussed at the end of the book.
I think this book should be rated a 5. It expresses honest feelings from a child's perspective. This book is more than just a story of a son missing his father. Many others can relate to a death of a family member. The story depicts much love in a family.
