My belief in this respect is founded on personal knowledge and personal observation. Locally chief of the Commissariat Department at Kanhpur when, in January 1856, Sir James Outram crossed the Ganges to depose the King of Oudh, I had witnessed the indignation which the very rumour of hispurpose caused among the sipahis of my own guard. I reported their excited state to my superiors, and was laughed at for my pains. But, impressed with the accuracy of my forecast, viz., that the annexation of Oudh would rouse indigna tion and anger in the sipahi army, I continued then, and after my transfer, two months later, to an appointment in the Military Audit Department in Calcutta, to keep a careful record of the several occurrences, all apparently of minor import, which supervened when the effects of the annexation of Oudh had been thoroughly realised by the sipahis. My observations led to the conclusion that they were thoroughly angered, and, a little later, that their minds were being mysteriously worked upon. I kept copious notes of the matters I observed, and I discussed them with my brother officers.

I usually enjoy a good British Empire read and this book is an expansive, detailed description of the Indian Mutiny of the mid 1850's. It's well written from a contemporary's view of what transpired and gives an interesting perspective of the Imperial and Colonial mindset of this period of history. Of course, to TRULY appreciate the detail included in this narrative, one would need to possess an in depth understanding of the geography of India, the organization of the British Army and its Native componnts (including an idea as to why so many supported their Dominion by the British for so long), the Colonial Administration, and even the personages of individuals who served in the British Colonial system. However, the book is well written and organized, allowing the reader to follow events that occurred simultaneously and to understand the relationship between what occurred in one place and its impact on another. It does not delve deeply into the more barbaric aspects of the Mutiny (e.g.,the massacre at Cawnpor and the British reprisals are given short shrift) but for a comprehensive overview of one of the major events in British Colonial history I recommend this book. ALERT: This is one of those 'pick it up, read some, put it down' books. It isn't a quick read but for bathroom and before bed reading its easy to pick up where you left off.Product details

Way too many references to areas and individual Officer's and units..slow unless you are trying to get into the fine points of the how the English Army operated at that time
It dragged and was largely a recital of dates and events but I just kept going with it.
It is to the bold that is given victory or in defeat an honor as a worthy foe. You do not win by being timid about what is conflict which is always ignited to revolt when a stupid system is attempted by force.
A very detailed and well written account of the British military responses to the uprising of the native Indian military and others in 1857. A good read for military history fans.

This fine coverage of the Mutiny of 1857 in India (sometimes called the"Sepoy Mutiny") gave me more detail than I needed but represents a careful, apparently accurate, summary of that insurrection; it was originally written by Col. Malleson over a century ago.
The author maintains that the proximate cause of the mutiny by the troops that had long been loyal to its British officers was not the new ammunition proposed to be distributed to the troops, with animal-grease lubricants that would offend both Moslem and Hindu religious sensibilities, but rather the inflammatory rumors to this effect that found a fertile soil among a populace disillusioned with the British rule for other reasons.
Despite the wealth of details that are hard to follow without maps, the narrative gives even the casual reader a pretty good idea of what happened. The success of the British (aided by some still-loyal Indian native and Sikh) forces in quelling a rebellion by their own erstwhile military partners who came to outnumber them about five to one is striking. British heroism and Indian brutality abound herein; an occasional native military leader is commended.
Malleson attributes their amazing victory to the inherent qualities of the British "race" (read culture). (Although colonialism has a bad name these days, the British colonies subsequently fared better than the French, once independent.) Malleson blames much of the fuel for the Mutiny to be the effort to graft Western governance on Eastern cultures, and we know that "nation-building" even today gets mixed reviews.
After the Mutiny was quelled, the British government replaced the East India Company as the ruling body in India, the British Queen proclaimed a magnanimous settlement declaration, and relative peace resumed, only to be fractured by the civil war between the Moslems and Hindus once independence was granted shortly after World War II. Thus were born Pakistan and eventually Bangladesh.
Well worth reading, excellent in its accomplishment of its goals, Malleson's book will be of particular value to those with an interest in this period and this area.
Comprehensive, very readable account of the event. Written well over a century ago the narrative is well structured, very informative, and exceptionally well constructed. This is probably the most concise history of the Sepoy Mutiny of 1857 that has been written. Facts are presented, you can make your own conclusions as to the right or wrong of any actions. Practically nothing is left out of this work that was known at the time.
